How We’re Using AI to Accelerate Sustainability at 51toCarbonZero

By Adam Rhodes, Head of Sales

At 51toCarbonZero, we believe that AI has a key role to play in enabling sustainability to move faster – but only if it’s used responsibly and paired with human judgment. I’m excited to share how we’re using artificial intelligence and automation across our platform to reduce manual work, improve accuracy and help businesses act with confidence.

The Three Problems AI Can Solve in Sustainability

When we built our AI features, we started by trying to solve real problems we were consistently hearing about across the sustainability space. The same three challenges kept coming up across sectors.

  1. Too much manual work
Sustainability teams spend an enormous amount of time collecting, cleansing and fixing data. That effort is often necessary – but it isn’t progress. In many cases, it delays the action teams are desperate to put in place.
  2. Inaccurate data undermines trust
If your footprint is based on estimates, is missing evidence, or contains errors, it’s hard to defend internally – let alone externally. That makes ROI for sustainability initiatives difficult to prove and slows decision-making.
  3. Lack of insight leads to inaction
Annual reports are useful, but they’re backwards-looking. Without real-time insight, trends get missed, opportunities are buried, and sustainability becomes reactive, not strategic.

Our Approach: AI Where It Helps, Humans Where It Counts

We use AI to handle repetitive, time-consuming work and to speed up analysis – tasks computers are good at. We rely on people to interpret the data, apply judgement and drive strategy.

This balance is at the heart of 51toCarbonZero’s philosophy:
“We don’t measure for the sake of it. We measure to enable change.”

Despite the common rhetoric, we’re not trying to replace sustainability teams or consultants with AI. In fact, we’ve expanded our advisory team and equipped them with AI tools as a force multiplier, to extend their impact.

We are also very conscious that AI has its own carbon footprint. That’s why we only use it when it genuinely accelerates the path to decarbonisation.

Three AI Features That Are Making a Difference

  1. AI Data Ingestion

Our AI reads structured and unstructured files – PDFs, spreadsheets, images, emails – and converts them into clean, structured data. It automatically flags:

  • Missing values
  • Anomalies
  • Inconsistencies or duplicates

It also calculates emissions automatically, saving time and reducing human error. This means:

  • Faster reporting
  • More accurate baselines
  • Fewer manual errors
  1. Supplier Data Scraping for Scope 3

Scope 3 emissions – especially purchased goods and services – are usually the hardest to measure. It’s often the largest part of the footprint too.

Our AI scrapes publicly available supplier data, including:

  • Emissions disclosure
  • CDP scores
  • SBTi alignment
  1. The AI Auditor

Think of it as a second pair of eyes, rather than a replacement for human review. The AI Auditor:

  • Flags anomalies or outliers
  • Detects double counting
  • Identifies boundary or category issues

This reduces approval bottlenecks and gives sustainability teams the confidence to publish disclosures and commit to targets.

People Still Matter

AI can speed things up, but people are what make the work meaningful.

That’s why our Climate Success Managers remain at the core of every client journey. They are the ones who:

  • Set science-based targets
  • Build credible reduction plans
  • Engage suppliers
  • Align sustainability with business goals and regulations

AI helps accelerate that work, but it doesn’t replace it.

Final Thought: Moving Faster with Confidence

Sustainability isn’t just about collecting data. It’s about understanding it, trusting it and acting on it.

At 51toCarbonZero, we’re using AI to eliminate friction, improve accuracy and empower teams – while staying clear about its limits.

Our belief is simple:

  • AI where it helps
  • Human judgment where it counts.

That’s how sustainability actually moves forward.
