At 51toCarbonZero, we believe that AI has a key role to play in enabling sustainability to move faster – but only if it’s used responsibly and paired with human judgment. I’m excited to share how we’re using artificial intelligence and automation across our platform to reduce manual work, improve accuracy and help businesses act with confidence.
When we built our AI features, we started by trying to solve real problems we were consistently hearing about across the sustainability space. The same three challenges kept coming up across sectors.
We use AI to handle repetitive, time-consuming work and to speed up analysis – tasks computers are good at. We rely on people to interpret the data, apply judgement and drive strategy.
This balance is at the heart of 51toCarbonZero’s philosophy:
“We don’t measure for the sake of it. We measure to enable change.”
Despite the common rhetoric, we’re not trying to replace sustainability teams or consultants with AI. In fact, we’ve expanded our advisory team and equipped them with AI tools as a force multiplier, to extend their impact.
We are also very conscious that AI has its own carbon footprint. That’s why we only use it when it genuinely accelerates the path to decarbonisation.
Our AI reads structured and unstructured files – PDFs, spreadsheets, images, emails – and converts them into clean, structured data. It automatically flags:
It also calculates emissions automatically, saving time and reducing human error. This means:
Scope 3 emissions – especially purchased goods and services – are usually the hardest to measure. It’s often the largest part of the footprint too.
Our AI scrapes publicly available supplier data, including:
Think of it as a second pair of eyes, rather than a replacement for human review. The AI Auditor:
This reduces approval bottlenecks and gives sustainability teams the confidence to publish disclosures and commit to targets.
AI can speed things up, but people are what make the work meaningful.
That’s why our Climate Success Managers remain at the core of every client journey. They are the ones who:
AI helps accelerate that work, but it doesn’t replace it.
Sustainability isn’t just about collecting data. It’s about understanding it, trusting it and acting on it.
At 51toCarbonZero, we’re using AI to eliminate friction, improve accuracy and empower teams – while staying clear about its limits.
Our belief is simple:
That’s how sustainability actually moves forward.
